Die Pandemie hat uns einmal mehr bewusst gemacht, wie zerbrechlich das Leben ist und wie wichtig es ist, die Toten angemessen betrauern zu können. Dramaturg Guy Cools hat sich daher in seinem neuen Werk „Performing Mourning. Laments In Contemporary Art“ mit Klageliedern und anderen Ritualen der Trauer beschäftigt und diese auf tiefgründige Weise erforscht.
He is particularly interested in how the emotions of loss need to be externalized. The laments are a formal device, used in many cultures to express and contain the emotions of grief.
In a poetic, complex and personal way, Cools explores cultural practices, traditions, rituals, and artistic performances. His narrative addresses many expressions of mourning: literature, anthropology, philosophy as well as contemporary art practices. The final section looks at artistic strategies for addressing or embodying mourning: dialogic methods that address personal loss, collective mourning rituals and how they invite the community to attend these losses. Contemporary examples of laments used not only to dialogue with the dead but also to communicate with loved ones who are absent due to migration or exile also play a role here. Also, a very emotional form of grief that occurs when we mourn the death of a child, including that of an unborn child, finds its place in this book. And finally, the very recent phenomenon of mourning not only the losses of the past, but also the loss of a future.

Dr. Guy Cools ist ein Tanz-Dramaturg aus Flandern. Er lebt in Wien und arbeitete als Tanzkritiker und Tanzkurator. Von 1990 bis 2002 kuratierte er das Tanzprogramm des Kunstencentrum Vooruit in Gent, Flandern.
In den letzten Jahren war er als Associate Professor für Tanzwissenschaft am Forschungsinstitut “Kunst in der Gesellschaft”, an der Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg und an der Universität Gent tätig, wo er zugleich seinen Doktortitel zu Thema “Tanz und Schriftlichkeit” erhielt.
